Orthodox Morning Prayers

"Prayer is a harbor in the storms of life, an anchor for those who are storm-tossed, the treasure of the poor, the security of the rich, the healing of the sick, the preservation of health. Prayer banishes evil things, and preserves the good." St. John Chrysostom
"Prayer is by nature a dialog and a union with God. Its effect is to hold the world together. It achieves a reconciliation with God." St. John Climacus
"But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." Matt. 6:6

Upon rising, before you begin your day, stand with reverence before the All-Seeing God, make the sign of the Cross and say:

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God, be merciful to me, a sinner. (thrice)

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere present and fillest all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Gracious One.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us. (thrice)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse away our sins; O Master, forgive us our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy Name's sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3 times.)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, the Power and the Glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

I

Thou hast raised me from my bed of sleep, O Lord.  Enlighten my mind and heart, and open my lips that I may praise Thee, O Holy Trinity; Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God, for the Mother of God have mercy on us.

II

Arising from our sleep, we hasten to Thee, O Blessed One, and we sing to Thee the Angelic Hymn, O Mighty One: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God, for the Mother of God have mercy on us.

III

Arising from my sleep, I hasten to Thee, O Master, the Lover of Man, and through Thy mercy I strive to do Thy work, and I pray unto Thee: help me at all times and in everything.  Deliver me from every worldly evil thing and from the devil's assistance.  Save me and lead me into Thy Eternal Kingdom.  For Thou art my Creator as well as my Provider and Giver of every blessing.  All my hope is in Thee, and I render glory to Thee now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

IV

Arising from the sleep, I give thanks to Thee, O Holy Trinity, because through Thy abundant goodness and long suffering Thou has not become angry with me, an idler and a sinner, neither hast Thou destroyed me with my iniquities but has manifested Thy love towards me as usual and hast raised me from my bed on which I've been thoughtlessly lying so that I might keep my morning watch and glorify Thy power.  And now, enlighten my spiritual eyes, and open my mouth that I may learn Thy words and understand Thy commandments, and do Thy will, and chant about Thee with a heartfelt confession, and that I may glorify Thy All-Holy Name of the Father Sand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

V

O Christ the True Light, Who illuminest and sanctifiest every man coming into the world:  let the light of Thy countenance be turned upon us, that in it we may behold the inapproachable light.  Guide our footsteps to the working according to Thy commandments, through the intercession of Thine All-Pure Mother and of all the Saints.  Amen.

Prayer to the Most Holy Trinity, by St. Basil the Great (d.379)

O Lord Almighty, God of Angelic hosts and of all flesh, that dwellest in the highest and lookest down on things that are lowly, that searchest the reins and the heart and innermost being, and clearly discernest the hidden things of men; Light from eternity and ever-existent, with Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning: Do Thou, O King Immortal, receive our prayers which we, trusting in the multitude of Thy mercies, offer to Thee at this present time from our soiled lips; forgive us our sins, in deed, word, and thought, which we have committed knowingly or in ignorance, and cleanse us from all stain of body or soul. Grant us to pass through all the night of this present life with watchful heart and sober thought, ever expecting the coming of the bright and appointed day of Thy Only-begotten Son, our Lord God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, whereon the judge of all shall come with glory to reward each according to his works. May we not fall way into sloth, but watching, and upright in activity, be found ready to accompany Him into the joy and divine palace of His glory, where the voice of those that feast is never silent, and the unspeakable delight of those that behold the ineffable beauty of Thy countenance. For Thou art the true Light that enlightenest and sanctifiest every manner of thing, and all creation doth hymn Thee unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayers to the Mother of God

Rejoice Mary, Mother of God, Virgin, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, for thou hast borne the Savior of our souls. Meet it is in truth, to glorify thee, O Birth-giver of God, ever blessed, and all undefiled, the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, thou who without stain didst bear God the word, true Birth-giver of God, we magnify thee.

O gracious Mother of the gracious God, O most pure and blessed Mary, the Mother of God, pour the mercy of thy Son and our God upon my impassionate soul, and with thine intercessions set me unto good deeds, that I may pass the rest of my life without blemish and, with thine aid, attain heaven. O Virgin mother of God, the only one who art pure and blessed. O Queen of the Heavenly Host, Defender of our souls: being delivered from evil, as thy servants, O Mother of God, we offer unto thee the hymns of thanks and victory; but as thou hast power invincible, deliver us from all calamity, that we may cry unto thee: Rejoice, O ever-Virgin Bride!

O virgin, spotless, undefiled, unstained, all-chaste and Pure Lady, Bride of God, who by the glorious birth-giving hast united God the Word with Man and linked our fallen nature with Heavenly Things; who art the hope of the hopeless, the helper of the oppressed, the ready protection of those who haste unto thee, and the refuge of Christians; despise me not, who am defiled and sinful, who by my wicked thoughts, words and deeds, have become an unworthy servant, and by my slothfulness have turned into a slave to evil affections. O Mother of the God of Love, have mercy and compassion upon me, a sinner and a prodigal. Accept this prayer which is offered to thee from my impure lips; and putting forward thy maternal influence with thy Son, my Lord and Master, beseech Him to open unto me the lovingkindness of His grace; beseech Him to overlook my countless transgressions, to give me true repentance and to make me to be a zealous doer of His commandments. And thou, being gracious and compassionate and tender-hearted, be thou ever present with me in this life as my defender and helper, so that I may turn aside the assault of my enemies, and guide me into salvation; help my poor soul at the hour of my death, and drive far from it all the dark forms of the evil ones. And in the dreadful Judgement Day, deliver me from everlasting punishment, and present me as an inheritor of the ineffable glory of the son, our God.

O may I obtain this, most-holy Lady and Birth-giver of God, through thine intercessions and mediations, by the grace and exceeding great love of thine Only-Begotten son, my Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ, to Whom is due, with the eternal Father and the All-Holy, Good and Life-Giving Spirit, all honor and glory and worship, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O most glorious Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ our God, accept our prayers and present them to thy son and our God, that He may, for thy sake, enlighten and save our souls.

A Prayer of the Optina Elders

O Lord, grant me strength to meet with serenity everything forthcoming today. Grant me to submit completely to Thy holy will. At every hour of this day guide and support me in all things. Whatsoever news may reach me in the course of this day, teach me to accept it with calmness and the conviction that all is subject to Thy holy will.

In all my words and actions direct my thoughts and feelings. In all unexpected occurrences, do not let me forget that all is sent down by Thee. Teach me to deal straightforwardly and wisely with every member of my family, neither embarrassing nor saddening anyone.

O Lord, grant me strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events that take place during it. Direct my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to be patient, to forgive and to love. Amen.

PSALM 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned and done this evil before Thee, that Thou mightest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that be humbled, they shall rejoice. Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence,! and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and with Thy governing Spirit establish me. I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness. O God, Thou God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not be pleased. A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that is broken and humbled God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be builded. Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings. Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

Prayer of Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow

My Lord, I know not what I ought to ask of Thee.
Thou and Thou alone knowest my needs.
Thou lovest me more than I am able to love Thee.
O Father, grant unto me, Thy servant, all which I cannot ask.
For a cross I dare not ask, nor for consolation; I dare only to stand in Thy presence.
My heart is open to Thee.
Thou seest my needs of which I myself am unaware. Behold and lift me up!
In Thy presence I stand, awed and silenced by Thy will and Thy judgments, into which my mind cannot penetrate.
To Thee I offer myself as a sacrifice.
No other desire is mine but to fulfill Thy will.
Teach me how to pray.
Do Thyself pray within me.
Amen.
